Tackling organic waste management in urban cities
Circa Biotech's first objective is to improve the organic waste management in urban cities. Mega-cities like Dubai generate high amounts of organic waste which are commonly disposed directly at landfills. In UAE alone, about 197 kg of food waste is generated per resident per year, totaling to a whopping 2,000,000,000 kg of food waste!
Instead of dumping organic waste in landfills, Circa Biotech aims to upcycle organic waste into high quality products using Black Soldier Fly Larvae. |
Providing resources to aquaculture & livestock production
The Black Soldier Fly Larvae utilized in the upcycling of organic waste creates high-quality organic fertilizers, proteins and lipids. These products can be applied to aquaculture and livestock production near to these mega-cities.
For the UAE, harvested Black Soldier Fly Larvae can be a sustainable protein source for fish and chicken farms across the country, replacing the need of fishmeal and soybean meal. Organic fertilizers as a by-product of the rearing of Black Soldier Fly Larvae, can be applied to agricultural farms. |
Optimizing products to cater to medical and environmental needs
Other than providing high quality proteins, oils and organic fertilizers to the agriculture and livestock industries, Circa Biotech would develop pharmaceutical and chemical products too.
Lauric acid which is the main content of oils from Black Soldier Fly Larvae, is applicable in medicines and cosmetics. Chitin which is obtained from the exoskeleton of these larvae, can be chemically modified to produce chitosan, a potential for efficient water purification systems. |
